Eagles Wings project:
School & Clinic Katwe, Kampala, Uganda

Katwe Slum in Kampala has become a second home to many who have volunteered with Eagles Wings. One of the very first projects Eagles Wings took on was to help set up a school and clinic right in the centre of the Katwe community that has become a lifeline for so many living in the area.

The clinic is always stocked with equipment and medicines to treat simple infections or injuries that before then, had killed so many because there was nowhere for people to go. The clinic is looked after by a trained nurse, and donations from medical clinics and hospitals in the UK keep it stocked with vital equipment. Omron Healthcare UK donated a portable blood pressure monitor which is perfect for a clinic like this where electricity is not always available.

Nsambya Full Gospel School is right at the heart of the slum and is attended by 378 children from the age of 3 1/2 to 16 years. The classes have about 30 pupils each, and it is run by a staff team of 13 and a wonderful head teacher called Harriet.

Pupils in this school take a very important exam when they reach the age of 14 years which decides whether they can go further in their education. If they pass this they can stay until they are 16 years old. After this, many children have to finish their education as there are no funds available to send them on to further schooling, university is not an option unless there is some kind of sponsorship.
One of the biggest challenges the school faces is lack of resources. Most children are sharing pens and broken rulers. People in the UK have kindly donated text books, however, they do not cover the same syllabus that is required for schools in Uganda. It is also difficult for staff who earn very little and work very hard.

By law, children who attend school in Uganda must wear a school uniform, own a pair of shoes and provide a snack for during the day. Many parents or guardians do not have the money for these things and therefore cannot send their child to be educated.
To date, we have sponsorship for 62 children who attend Nsambya Full Gospel School. People in the UK are paying £15 - £20 a month for one child to attend school.

Paul Kinataama, our partner in Uganda has been a friend of Bruce’s for many years. Paul oversees the running of the clinic, the school, and also child sponsorship. Paul knows the families and children living here very well and this has given us great access into the slum to be able to help these people.

If you would like to sponsor a child in Katwe to go to school, or even a teacher’s salary please get in touch with us.
