India

Eagles Wings has been active in providing essential aid into India for over 13 years, in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, through known partners.

With such massive needs, it is critical to target aid through such trusted partners, as corruption and the misappropriation of funds is a sad part of life in India. With income levels down to £7 per day for hard labour in rural regions, a simple donation of £50 can be a life saver but a great temptation to someone who is struggling to feed their own family, for example.

The tsunami devastation of Boxing Day 2004 on the east coast of Tamil Nadu, particularly around Chennai, and subsequent monsoon deluges along the coast of Andhra Pradesh have been the focus of Eagles Wings’ attention for a number of years.

The charity initially purchased 2 acres of land in 2005 and financed the building of a purpose built children’s centre in Yelambakkam, about 2 hours drive inland from Chennai. Over 100 children, orphaned by the tsunami, were taken in, clothed, fed, cared for and subsequently educated in good local schools. The centre has developed since then, with more buildings, separate boys and girls accommodation blocks, washing facilities and a communal hall being added as funds and sponsorship has allowed.

Other UK charities and support groups have taken over the termly financing of school fees, food and a school bus. This has allowed Eagles Wings to re-focus its relief work into other poor and marginalised communities, who do not have the basics.
Over the first 8 years of this project, from 2005-2012, Eagles Wings delivered school bags, Christmas gifts, educational and sports equipment, uniforms and regularly donated lumpsums to keep building work ongoing, clean water flowing and electricity provided to the childrens centre.

Regular visits have been made through the hub cities of Hyderabad and Chennai into more remote rural communities and it is on these visits that connections with potential partners are made. Eagles Wings has taken a cautious approach with each project in India and insisted on a flow of reports, photographic and, where possible, video evidence showing that each donation has been used as designated. Perhaps the most satisfying delivery method is in person!

It is a great thrill to meet the children and families for whom you have built a simple house, provided school books, supplied a bag of rice or spices, or given a Christmas present through the generous donations of our UK supporters.

More significantly, Eagles Wings has taken to providing a family or community with something that will help generate income. Some of our most successful purchases have been fishing nets, weigh scales, charcoal burners, bicycles, sewing machines, tricycles and pressing irons. These simple items enable people to earn a living and support their families, even at a very basic level. Typically a donation between £50 and £100 can do this and provide a longer term solution to that of donating traditional food aid.

In rural communities, where poverty and malnutrition is rife, Eagles Wings is encouraging monthly sponsorship of between £15 and £20 per month, by standing order, to help poor children be fed properly, housed, cared for safely, and educated in a local school.

In May 2013, Bruce Oliver, visited Kallur in rural Andhra Pradesh to help support some 50 orphans aged 4 to 16 who have been taken in by partners based locally and are known to the Charity.
